Student Wins Best Paper Award at IIFET 2026, Denmark
Md. Nasimuzzaman
Sabbir, a postgraduate student of the Department of Agricultural Finance and
Banking, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, has brought
international recognition to the university by winning the prestigious JIFRS-Yamamoto
Best Paper Award at the 22nd Biennial Conference of the
International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET 2026),
held at Nordic House, Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, from 17 to 21 August 2026.
The award was
presented to Md. Nasimuzzaman Sabbir for his research paper titled "Resilience
Capacity of Aquaculture Farmers in Climate Vulnerable Areas of Bangladesh",
which has also been published in the Journal of Environmental
Management. The paper assesses the resilience capacity of prawn
farmers in the climate-vulnerable coastal districts of Bangladesh using the
USAID Market Systems Resilience framework, marking the first empirical
application of this framework in coastal aquaculture research.
The JIFRS-Yamamoto
Best Paper Award is one of the most prestigious recognitions in the field of
fisheries economics, awarded by IIFET to one outstanding paper presented at its
biennial conference. IIFET is a leading global organization working on
fisheries, aquaculture, and marine resource economics, with members from over
50 countries worldwide.
Md. Nasimuzzaman
Sabbir received full participant support from IIFET, covering international
airfare, conference registration, hotel accommodation, and travel insurance,
enabling him to represent Bangladesh and BAU on the international stage for the
first time.
The research was
conducted under the supervision of Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman Khan,
Head of the Department of Agricultural Finance and Banking, Bangladesh
Agricultural University, and was funded by the DANIDA project:
Climate-friendly and Climate Resilient Prawn Farming in Bangladesh (21-01-KU).
Professor Dr. Md.
Akhtaruzzaman Khan expressed his pride in this achievement, noting that the
award reflects the high quality of research being conducted at BAU and the
growing recognition of Bangladeshi scholarship in international fisheries
economics.
