Professor James Lowenberg-DeBoer from Harper Adams University in the United Kingdom visited the honourable Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Professor Dr. A K Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan, at his office on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 12:30 PM.
Professor Jess visited BAU and interacting with supply stakeholders of agri-tech including academic, researchers, industry and policymakers as part of their research work on “Appropriate Mechanization in Bangladesh for Sustainable Smallholders’ Arable Crop Farming: From Local Adoption to Scaling Up” commissioned by the International Growth Centre (IGC), an economic research centre directed by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and University of Oxford.
Associate Professor Dr. A. K. M. Abdullah Al-Amin from the Department of Agricultural Economics and Professor Dr. Anisur Rahman, Department of Farm Power and Machinery at BAU, hosted Professor Jess in Bangladesh as part of their research work.
While discussing with the honourable Vice Chancellor, they exchanged ideas of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in agriculture known as ‘Agriculture 4.0. The scope of Bangladesh, especially smallholders’ agriculture was discussed. How agri-tech economists could guide national policy with evidence-based suggestions was pointed out. They also discussed the top policy stakeholders’ workshop planned to be held at Dhaka in the coming days.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Shahidul Haque, Students Affairs Adviser and Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Alim, Proctor of BAU were present and exchanged their views on how smallholders’ agriculture like Bangladesh could embrace agri-tech as part of evolving transformation in agriculture.
Professor James holds the Elizabeth Creak Chair in Agri-Tech Applied Economics at Harper Adams University. He also Emeritus Professor of Excellence in International Entrepreneurship at Purdue University, Past President of the International Society for Precision Agriculture (ISPA) and from 2016-2022 was co-editor of the refereed journal Precision Agriculture published by Springer. Currently he is serving as an associate editor for manuscript related to economics. He has over 30 years of worldwide experience in agricultural research, teaching, outreach and leadership. His research focuses on the economics of agricultural technology. In 2012 he was made a Chevalier of the National Order by the government of Burkina Faso for his work improving food security in the country. He brings to his research, teaching, outreach and leadership a perspective gained through private sector experience as a farmer and journalist.
